While there was less excitement over VR this year, as opposed to last year’s CES, there was one key VR announcement. Panasonic demonstrated the first ultra-high-resolution (UHD) VR eyeglasses.
According to Panasonic, these are the “world’s first High Dynamic Range (HDR) capable ultra-high definition (UHD) virtual reality (VR) eyeglasses.” The goal is for them to have a comfortable fit that makes users feel as if they’re wearing regular eyeglasses.
Conventional VR glasses can deliver high-quality images and sound. However, those glasses tend to be bulky and require users to strap the glasses onto their heads with a headband, which can cause wearer fatigue.
For these new VR glasses, Panasonic developed a high-performance display device in cooperation with the Kopin Corporation. Kopin is a leading manufacturer of display devices for VR glasses. Panasonic also incorporated its own audio and visual technologies into the device, including signal processing technologies cultivated through the development of video equipment such as TVs and Blu-ray disc players, acoustic technologies from Technics audio products, and optical technologies used in LUMIX digital cameras.
The mix of these technologies enabled Panasonic to achieve compact and lightweight VR glasses offering high-quality images and optimal sound.
